Every 2 hours someone dies from choking. It is the 4th leading cause of death in children 1 child every 5 days will die from choking it is a leading cause of death among individuals over 65
100,000 annually are seen in the ER due to a choking incident.
Hard candy is the number cause of choking, followed by food (carrots, apples, grapes, nuts, peanut butter, marshmallows) and toys.
Choking can lead to respiratory arrest which can lead to cardiac arrest.
Heartsaver AED/CPR provides hands on instruction on how to assist someone that is choking. There are many different situations that may arise that can affect the steps. Is the choking person bigger than the helper, what happens if the choking person becomes unconscious, what if the person choking is pregnant?
